Backend Engineer, Identity

Tailscale is seeking a Backend Engineer to focus on identity and access management for their secure networking product. You will develop core backend services, contribute to product ideation, and collaborate with cross-functional teams in a fully remote, early-stage environment. This role involves full product lifecycle ownership and requires strong motivation and asynchronous collaboration skills.

• Develop core software components for backend services and identity management
• Own the entire product lifecycle from ideation to strategic decision-making
• Build features for authentication and authorization protocols (SSO, OAuth2, SAML, WebAuthn, SCIM)
• Ensure observability, scalability, and stability of running services
• Participate in on-call rotations for incident response
• Maintain a security-first mindset in design and implementation
