Research Scientist - College of Engineering - Mechanical Engineering

Carnegie Mellon University's College of Engineering seeks a Research Scientist to lead the Safe AI Lab's research program. You will build digital twins of industrial processes, generate safety-critical scenarios from data, and evaluate robot policies in physics simulators to produce quantitative safety evidence and validate sim-to-real transfer. This role involves proposing independent research, coordinating student teams, and publishing findings at leading venues.

• Build digital twins of industrial work cells and assembly processes
• Develop scenario generation pipelines for safety-critical cases
• Evaluate robot policies using physics simulators (Isaac Sim, MuJoCo)
• Validate sim-to-real transfer on lab robot platforms
• Propose and lead independent research goals
• Coordinate and direct student researchers
