Principal AI/ML Research Engineer

WEX is seeking a Principal AI/ML Research Engineer to lead applied AI research and develop novel models, focusing on generative AI and deep learning for fintech challenges. This role involves bridging academic research with production impact, driving innovation in areas like Transformer-based Payment Foundation Models, and collaborating with various teams to transform data into intelligent, predictive models.

• Lead applied AI research and novel model development in GenAI and deep learning
• Pioneer Transformer-based Payment Foundation Models for transaction data
• Drive research in AI/ML for fraud detection, risk scoring, and predictive commerce
• Spearhead prototyping in LLMs, RAG, agentic workflows, and Reinforcement Learning
• Own WEX’s AI research strategy, model optimization, and experimentation standards
• Collaborate with Data Engineering, Product, Security, and Risk teams
